This is basically like casting into a different, more active part of the pond you are fishing in. If the fish ain’t bitin’ where you’re fishing (your own site) then go fish another part of the lake with OPP!

Of course, what started this whole journey into PDF-land was a desire on my part to create PDFs cheaply. So buying a whole new office suite, even if that suite doesn t carry the Microsoft logo, kind of defeats the purpose. There is a different suggestion: use OpenOffice. OpenOffice comes with a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and a drawing program. The latest version of OpenOffice OpenOffice 1.1 even comes with PDF and Macromedia Flash export.

Oh, and OpenOffice is completely free. You can download it at

If downloading and installing a whole new office suite doesn t sound too appetizing, fear not. There are many other PDF tools we recommend!

For online document conversion (a la Adobe s createpdf.adobe.com), we recommend goBCL at

Both services appear to be free, but Carnegie Mellon s can be a bit flaky at times.

10. If you are crafty, incorporate them into your designs:
embellish them with rubber stamps, or blend them with other art
projects. You can also mount them to greeting cards you create
and send to customers and prospects.

11.When mailing out information: Take a number 10 envelope,
facing you and upside down. Fold the envelope in thirds. When
you turn it around, there is a little pocket to tuck your card
in. Include it in the mailing. Using a colored envelope makes
the presentation even more dramatic.

12. Scan your card in and use it as a graphic for when you
exchange links with other websites. The other site can use your
graphic as the link.

contact information on it, as well as an introduction to your
business.

28. Email Signature. Put your contact information into a
signature file for email, along with a link to your website (be
sure to include the “http” in order to make it “clickable.”)

29. Vcard. These are electronic business cards that recipients
can click on and automatically add to their address books. Do a
web search for “vcard” to find software that supports this
technology. Then use it in all your emails!

30. One consulting company, which works with designers of
products for people with disabilities, prints their cards in
Braille. It reminds their clients how they can help them comply
with disability laws. It also gets people asking for information.

The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design s User-Lab http://www.user-lab.com will host the host International Design for Engagability Conference (iDeC) in July 2004.

User-Lab is a unique facility in art, design and media education, based in Birmingham, West Midlands. The lab aims to facilitate knowledge transfer between designers, businesses and technologists in the growing area of experience design. The first iDeC will bring together, researchers, designers and organisations and focus on issues in providing accessible, usable and engaging products and services.

iDeC will take place on the 6-7th July 2004 in Birmingham, West Midlands, comprising of presentations and keynote speakers from commercial and research organisations. The aim of the conference is to bring together a wide range of practitioners with their own unique insights into understanding the user experience.

“Engagability is how companies can add value to customers. Old school usability ensured that user could operate the products but did little to address why people value some products and not others. This conference will bring together researchers at the cutting edge of engagabilty and demonstrate methods for increasing user satisfaction”, adds John Knight Usability Engineer at User-Lab.
